LOUŸS (Pierre). Aphrodite, Ancient Customs. Paris, Printed for Henri Couderc de Saint Chamant, 1910. Folio size, dark blue morocco leather, wide border divided into eight panels, each outlined by a brown fillet and decorated with red roses; decorated spine, beaded fillet on the inside, olive-green morocco lining, brown mosaic border, with two bouquets of white primroses in each corner, dark blue moiré endpapers, edges gilt on endpapers, cover and spine (Noulhac binding 1918—Madeleine Noulhac). A precious and famous edition printed on behalf of the patron and bibliophile Henri Couderc de Saint Chamant, who intended this single copy—adorned with original watercolors by Dugommier—for himself. Ultimately, he decided to print four additional copies for the collaborators of this unprecedented bibliophilic project. This copy was printed for Adolphe Giraldon, the artist who designed the decorative frames around the text, which are here delicately rendered in watercolor. It is illustrated with 40 masterful original watercolors by Edmond Malassis (6 insert plates, 32 headpieces, and 2 medallion portraits). Beautiful lined binding, executed by Henri Noulhac based on drawings by his daughter Madeleine.
