ROULLÉ (Abbé Pierre). The Holy Conduct of Man in This World, or The Life of Salvation and the Salutary Method That Must Necessarily Be Observed at the Beginning, During, and at the End of Life in Order to Be Saved. Paris, Gilles Gourault, 1662. In-12, red morocco leather, gilt scrolls framing the edges, scattered with fleurs-de-lis on the covers and on the spine between the raised bands, coat of arms in the center of the covers, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First edition. A fine portrait of Louis XIV, engraved after Moncornet, folded and placed opposite the dedication to the Queen Mother. The author, parish priest of the Church of Saint-Barthélemy in Paris and an anti-Jansenist, published a scathing pamphlet in 1664 against Molière’s *Tartuffe* and convinced the king to ban the play. Morocco leather binding embossed with a fleur-de-lis pattern and the coat of arms of Louis XIV, King of France and Navarre. Coat-of-arms ex-libris of the Marquis de Valadous. Old handwritten ex-libris by Rochefort. Small holes and a worm-eaten area on the endpapers of several quires, not extending to the text. Two split bands with a small loss at the top cap; minor repairs to the caps and corners.
