[PRÉVOST (the abbot)]. Memoirs to Serve as a History of Virtue, Excerpts from the Diary of a Young Lady. Cologne [Paris], n.p., 1762. 4 volumes in-12, speckled fawn calfskin, triple gilt fillet, smooth decorated spine, red title labels and olive-colored volume numbers, interior roulette, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this adaptation of *Memoirs of Miss Sidney Bidulph* (1761), a successful epistolary novel by the Irish novelist Frances Sheridan (1724–1766), a major Anglo-Saxon author who preceded Jane Austen in the genre of the sentimental novel. A fine copy, very well bound. It comes from the library of Louis-Pierre Parat de Chalandray, tax collector of Lorraine, and includes his engraved coat-of-arms bookplate (on Volume IV only; the others have been torn out) and this handwritten ex-dono inscription on a flyleaf in Volume I: Given by Mme de Mougeron in February 1784 to Mr. de Chalandray. Some scuffing on the binding; a small tear on one cap.
