MANUSCRIPT. — Sottizier. A manuscript in multiple handwriting styles, comprising 226 folios. No place, no date (circa 1700–1715). Folio size, ochre half-basane, decorated spine, brown morocco patch (modern binding). A collection of seditious, anticlerical, romantic, or liberal writings. It contains, in particular, three significant excerpts from the account of the second voyage of the Amphitrite (the first French ship to dock on the Chinese coast), written by Lieutenant Bouvet de la Touche, one of the ship’s officers (Three excerpts from a handwritten journal of the voyage to China undertaken in the years 1701, 1702, and 1703 by the Amphitrite). Also noted is this list of court figures who performed in plays, among whom are cited the Duke of Burgundy (Eraste in *The Misanthrope*), the Duke of Maine (the Lame Devil), M. de Villars (Matamor in *L’Illusion comique*), M. Donzi (Don Juan in *Le Festin de Pierre*), M. de Luxembourg (the cuckold in *L’Ombre de Molière*), etc. Or this curious, pitiful, and lamentable story that befell a man named Rousseau, the son of a shoemaker, whom the devil possessed for having disowned his father. The first three pages have been restored; numerous pages are stained at the top, with the stains sometimes extending into the text.
