LE MOINE (Pierre-Camille). *Diplomatique-pratique, or Treatise on the Organization of Archives and Collections of Charters*, a work essential for land-registry commissioners, custodians of the titles of former seigneuries, bishoprics, Chapters, Monasteries, Communities, and City Councils, and to all those who wish to devote themselves to the study of the Monuments of Antiquity. Metz, Joseph Antoine, 1765. Quarto, speckled half-basane, smooth spine decorated with double gilt fillets, speckled edges (binding circa 1800). First edition of this paleographer’s manual, one of the very first treatises on archival science written in French: it features a fold-out chart and 12 plates of ancient scripts. A “Practical Gothic Dictionary, or Dictionary of Low Gallicisms, for the Understanding of Charters” occupies pp. 317–387. The “Supplement to the Book,” written by Battenay & Le Moine (Paris, Despilly, 1772), which includes 52 plates of ancient scripts (the title lists 53, but various copies consulted all contain only 52, as does ours). Engraved bookplate by Joannae Buffet, with the motto “Laboremus.” Spine is dry, but otherwise a pleasant copy.
