JUSTEL (Christophe). *Codex canonum ecclesiae africanae*. Paris: Abraham Pacard, 1615. 2 parts in one in-8 volume, flexible vellum binding of the period, traces of lacing, pen-written title on the spine. First edition of this first critical edition of the canons of the early African Church. Dedicated to Jacques-Auguste de Thou, it is composed in Latin based on ancient manuscripts and accompanied by a Greek version. The second part contains the *Observationes* and *Notae* by Christophe Justel (1580–1649), a scholar who served as an advisor to Henry IV and to whom we owe the establishment of the scholarly library of the Academy of Sedan. A copy belonging to Étienne Baluze (1630–1718), Colbert’s famous librarian, bearing his autograph signature at the bottom of the title page. A great scholar and book collector, Baluze served as librarian of the Bibliotheca Colbertina from 1667 to 1700, during which time he acquired several Oriental manuscripts (Arabic, Hebrew, etc.). Upon his death, the printed works from his personal library were dispersed at auction (cat. Bibliotheca Baluziana, 1719, vol. II, no. 6833). Corner damage with loss of a few words on folio K2. The first endpaper is missing; there is rubbing on the edges, one of which is open.
