OFFICE OF THE CHAMBER (Marin). The Characters of the Passions. Amsterdam, Antoine Michel, 1658 (1662)–1663. 5 tomes in 4 volumes, 12mo, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, decorated spine, interior lace, gilt edges (Capé). A delightful Elzevirian edition, adorned with a beautiful etched frontispiece title page dated 1658. (Willems, no. 1233.) The work, a masterpiece by the philosopher Cureau de La Chambre (1594–1669), physician to Chancellor Séguier and Louis XIII, deals with simple and mixed passions: love, joy, laughter, desire, hope, anger, animal instinct, hatred, tears, fear, and despair. The first two volumes are presented here in the second edition of 1662. An 18th-century handwritten bookplate, now almost faded, appears on the title pages. A very fine copy from the Robert Hoe Library (1912, III, no. 1810), with bookplate. Minimal scuffing on the caps and corners. The endpapers are slightly yellowed.
Delivery is optional. You can use the carrier of your choice. The stated price does not include the lot price or the auction house fees.
