BERTIN (Théodore Pierre). Science in Miniature, or A Collection of Useful Arts and Crafts, Made Accessible to Young People. Paris, Billois, 1810. 2 volumes, small 12mo, root-stained calfskin, gilt roulette border, smooth decorated spine, red endpapers, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Engraved title page and 23 illustrations depicting artisans in their workshops or on job sites: baker, apothecary, carpenter, jeweler, wool carder, stonemason, sailor, etc. Two plates relate to the book trade: the tanner (vol. I, pp. 114–124), who prepares hides, particularly for bookbinders, and the engraver and typefounder (vol. II, pp. 57–72). This charming book was not listed in the Gumuchian catalog. Its author, Théodore Pierre Bertin (1751–1819)—whose name is traditionally associated with shorthand, which he introduced to France—also developed and produced bookbindings known as “odorless varnish” bindings. Slight defects in the binding.
