In-8, fawn sheepskin, large embossed design formerly gilded and silvered, wide border of various scrolls and fillets framing a panel adorned with spandrels and a central motif engraved with fine tools, traces of ties, plain spine decorated lengthwise, gilt edges (contemporary binding). A treatise on the eternal bliss of the saints by Robert Bellarmine (1542–1621), an Italian Jesuit and theologian who was notably entrusted with the prosecution of the famous trials of Giordano Bruno and Galileo. Canonized in 1930, he was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church the following year. Remarkable and fresh Flemish binding of the period. From the Jean Furstenberg Library, with an ex-libris from the Furstenberg-Beaumesnil Foundation. A few very skillful and discreet restorations to the binding.
