TEUERDANCK. The Most Illustrious Knight... known as Theuer-Danck. Ulm, Matthäus Schultes, 1679. Gothic folio, cold-stamped sowhide on wooden boards, decorated with scrolls and fillets on the covers, two clasps (16th-century binding). New edition of this famous chivalric and allegorical poem composed on the occasion of the marriage of Maximilian I and Princess Mary of Burgundy, whose original 1517 edition is considered one of the masterpieces of 16th-century German printing. Copperplate-engraved frontispiece and 123 large woodcuts by Leonard Beck, Hans Burgkmair, Hans Schauffelein, and others, reproduced from the original edition. This copy is housed in a 16th-century cold-stamped binding that likely originally covered a thicker volume; the endpapers have been replaced. Folio U4, which contains text on the recto, is missing. The volume ends at folio X6, the verso of which contains a running-head announcing a continuation; however, the digitized copy from the Augsburg Library ends in the same way. Slight mold at the corners of the last 6 folios; foxing. Binding is soiled; tear on the upper cap; end of a clasp is broken.
