SCRIPTORES REI RUSTICAE. — CATO and VARRON. *Libri de Re rustica* by M. Cato, Book I; by M. Terentius Varro, Book III. Paris, Robert Estienne, [August 16], 1543. In-8, fawn morocco, covers decorated with a pattern of compartments in a mosaic of black, red, and olive green, all enhanced by straight and curved gold fillets and fleurons, small gold coat of arms in the center, plain spine adorned with a repeated gilded and mosaic-style rosette, gilt edges (contemporary binding). The only edition published by the Estiennes of this collection of texts by the great agronomists of Latin antiquity. The volume presented here constitutes one of the five parts of the edition. (Renouard, Estienne, p. 55.) A rebound copy, covered in a lovely binding with a mosaic decoration of a very distinctive type. The small coats of arms in the center were gilded at a later date. Red paper with a gold-stamped pattern is pasted onto the endpapers and flyleaves. A handwritten bookplate dated 1631 appears at the top of the title page, and a modern dry seal appears at the bottom. A bookplate of Francisci Boyer dated 1707 appears on one flyleaf. An old handwritten monogram repeated on the title page. From the Syston Park library, with an engraved coat-of-arms bookplate. A slight ink stain on the edge of the pages in the last section. Minor scuffing on the binding.
