PLUTARCH. The Lives of the Illustrious Greeks and Romans. S.l. [Geneva], by Guillaume de Laimarié, 1594. A substantial folio volume, red morocco leather, with a double border of two gilt fillets punctuated by a fleur-de-lis in the corners, a medallion of foliage in the center and corresponding spandrels, an ornate spine, and gilt edges (contemporary binding). Geneva edition in the highly regarded translation by the humanist Jacques Amyot. (GLN-6221.) It also includes the Lives of Epaminondas, Philip of Macedon, Dionysius the Elder, Octavius Caesar Augustus, Plutarch, and Seneca by Simon Goulart, which appears in continuous pagination with a separate title page. The edition is well printed, with a lovely set of ornate initials, and is illustrated within the text with several small portraits in woodcut medallions. Large typographic mark featuring an olive tree on the title page. A superb copy, trimmed, in a remarkable, strictly period morocco binding decorated with spandrels and medallions of foliage. Six folios are out of order (ff. 485 and 486, 543 and 44, and 743 and 744). A few small wormholes in the lower margin of some quires. Minor and skillful restorations to the binding; endpapers and lining replaced; spine slightly thinned; slight rubbing on the lower edges.
