MONTAIGNE (Michel de). The Essays. New edition, discovered after the author’s death... Paris, Abel L’Angelier, 1595 [or 1602?]. Folio, fawn calfskin, double gilt fillet, decorated spine, edges speckled with red (17th-century binding). First complete edition, partly in the original: it establishes the definitive text of the Essays. Compiled by Marie de Gournay, Montaigne’s “daughter-in-law,” it contains an apologetic preface that Mademoiselle de Gournay did not include in subsequent editions until 1617. (Balsamo & Simonin, nos. 258–259; Tchemerzine, vol. IV, p. 876.) Copy with the errata in its first version, not bound in cardboard. A few handwritten annotations in the margins, handwritten corrections in pen. The title page (recreated as a facsimile) and folios Ll3–4 (pp. 401–404) are missing. Some foxing. Upper hinge and one joint restored; binding stained; leather missing at the bottom of the endpapers; corners rubbed.
Delivery is optional. You can use the carrier of your choice. The stated price does not include the lot price or the auction house fees.
