MANUSCRIPT. — Book of Hours for use in Paris, with a calendar for use in western France (Touraine; Poitou). In French and Latin, an illuminated manuscript on parchment. France, western France?, circa 1470–1480. 149 ff., preceded by 3 parchment endpapers; manuscript on parchment, with lacunae (at a minimum, the beginning of each major section of the text is missing; gaps also in the body of the text), Gothic script in dark brown ink, 15 lines per page, ruled in pale red ink (text size: 105 x 65 mm), headings in red, line endings in blue or dark pink with ornamental highlights in liquid gold, small initials in liquid gold on pink or blue backgrounds (1 to 2 lines high), larger initials marking the major liturgical divisions in blue on a dark red background with liquid gold ornamentation (4 lines high), seven illuminated side margins on reserved backgrounds with blue and gold acanthus leaf motifs, foliage, and flowers (marking the various canonical hours of the Hours of the Virgin). Grained sheepskin binding, spine with 5 raised bands, compartmentalized and decorated with fleurons, gilt edges. A few stains on the parchment; covers rubbed with some scuffing; gilding on the spine rubbed; corners worn. Dimensions of the leaves: 157 x 123 mm; dimensions of the binding: 165 x 128 mm. Provenance: 1. Manuscript copied in Touraine or Poitou, with a calendar listing Saint Gatien (first bishop of Tours) and Saint Lidoire (second bishop of Tours) twice in red. Noteworthy is the inclusion in the litanies of Saint Néomadie (Néomaye), venerated in Poitou and western France. The liturgical practice of the Hours of the Virgin follows the “universal” Parisian rite, or at least the one prevalent in France. - 2. Several 16th-century inscriptions have been redacted. However, one inscription signed “De Billy” in Compiègne is legible. Partially erased inscriptions on fol. 149v. - 3. Inscription (16th-century hand) appearing twice (ff. 46v; 132): “Jehan le Clercq residing in Prinon” [the second inscription reads “Pinon”]. There is a town named Pinon in the Aisne department. - 4. Engraved ex-libris vignette: “Ex libris F.N.J. Edouard Ferry Schutzenberger, former president of the Bar Association of Saint-Dié. 1887.” An amateur archaeologist, Édouard Ferry-Schutzenberger (1820–1887) served as president of the Bar Association of Saint-Dié, his hometown.
