DIURNALE ROMANUM, the entire office recently promulgated... Paris, Yolande Bonhomme, 1542. In-16, fawn calfskin, decorated with straight and curved tinted bands intertwined in a diamond-rectangle pattern around a central twist; the center bears the motto SPES MEA DEUS on three lines, flanked by the initials G and B, the background of the decoration dotted with small, varied iron motifs, traces of ties, decorated spine, gilt and chiseled edges, modern slipcase (contemporary binding). A charming edition printed in red and black Roman type, adorned with 2 woodcuts. A copy with wide margins, ruled, in an elegant Parisian binding with tinted decoration. The covers bear the motto “Spes mea deus” (My hope is in God), which King Henry III adopted as early as 1575. It is reproduced by Hobson and Culot in *Italian and French 16th-Century Bookbindings*, no. 34. The copy bears the engraved bookplate of Fletcher W. Battershall (1866–1929), an American bibliophile with a passion for the study of bookbinding, to which he devoted three works, including *Bookbinding for Bibliophiles* (1902). From the libraries of John Roland Abbey (III, 1967, no. 2207) and Michel Wittock (III, 2005, no. 16). Title heavily restored. Binding heavily restored (spine and edges of the covers redone), endpapers replaced.
