W Edye - Head of the Double Dock at Plymouth, Erected in 1817. This image depicts an early 19th-century technical architectural engraving titled Transverse Section of a Roof over the Head of the Double Dock at Plymouth, Erected in 1817. The massive wooden roof structure was designed by Sir Robert Seppings, a highly influential naval architect and the Surveyor of the Navy from 1813 to 1832. During this era, large timber-framed roofs were built over building slips and dry docks to protect wooden warships from rainwater, preventing wood rot during construction or extensive repairs. The print notes that it was drawn by William Edye, who served as a skilled draughtsman under the Surveyor of the Navy at Plymouth and engraved by WH Lizars, Edinburgh.
