GABRIEL (Henri Brouwers, known as Henri). “Spatial Community” (1975). Plastic sheets, cut out, dated and signed on the back, mounted in a black frame. Frame dimensions: 64.5 x 49.5 cm; artwork dimensions: 61.5 x 46.5 cm. Henri Gabriel (1918–1994), born in Brussels, was a self-taught artist. He created his first kinetic art compositions around 1960. His works, based on geometric shapes, create a sense of depth through natural light. In 1965, along with artists Emiel Bergen, Gilbert Decock, Victor Noël, and Marcel-Henri Verdren, he founded the group D4. In 1966, with the arrival of Jo Delahaut, the group changed its name to the evocative term “Geoform,” immediately defining its chosen artistic direction. A retrospective was held at the museums in Verviers and Mons in 1995.
