MARAIS Jean (1913–1998), “Lion.” Bronze vase with a golden patina depicting a double-sided lion’s head with a radiating mane. Signed and numbered 12/73. Lost-wax stamp “FBL” (Fonderie de bronze Lauragaise). Traces of oxidation. Dimensions: 32 x 29 cm. Having settled in Vallauris in the 1970s, the actor became a ceramicist, sculptor, and potter. His visual art, long overshadowed by his fame on screen, is now being rediscovered: stylized faces, animal sculptures, sculptural vases, and glazed dishes. Each piece signed by Marais bears the mark of a man who sought to create until his very last day.
