CALES, Pierre (1870–1961), “Fontaine de Tencin” (Isère–Savoie). Oil on panel, signed and dated 1958 in the lower right corner, 46 x 78 cm. Framed. Jean-Pierre Calestroupat, better known as Abbé Calès, was a French painter, born in Vienne on August 31, 1870, and died in Tencin on October 15, 1961. At age 20, he attended the minor seminary at Le Rondeau in Grenoble, where he received guidance from Abbé Laurent Guétal, though he was not significantly influenced by him. It was Philippe Charlemagne, himself a student of Jean Achard, who became his mentor. Initially appointed as an assistant pastor in Rives, then as parish priest in Hurtières, he arrived at the parish in Tencin in 1902 and never left. He is known for his landscapes of the Dauphiné region. His favorite subject was the Grésivaudan Valley, which he painted throughout the seasons. His paintings are often panoramic, executed with a palette knife in thick strokes. He can be associated with the Impressionists or Post-Impressionists, but also with the Fauvists due to his exuberant colors. Several of his paintings are housed at the Grenoble Museum.
