GUILLOU, Alfred (1844–1926). “Portrait of a Gentleman with a Beard and Glasses.” Oil on canvas, signed lower left, 55 x 44 cm. Minor craquelure. Framed. Alfred Guillou received his first drawing lessons from the lithographer Théodore Lemonnier, whom he met in Concarneau in 1860. On Lemonnier’s advice, he moved to Paris in 1862, where he attended the Académie Suisse for a time and continued his training with Alexandre Cabanel. It was there that he met Jules Bastien-Lepage, Fernand Cormon, and Théophile Deyrolle. He made his debut at the 1868 Salon with his *Young Breton Fisherman*, then returned to his hometown. Inspired by naturalism, his favorite subjects were drawn from daily life in the fishing port, often depicted on large canvases, such as *The Sardine Women of Concarneau* (1896, Quimper Museum of Fine Arts), or *The Unloading of Tuna in Concarneau* (1902, Saint-Brieuc Museum of Art and History). Together with his friend Théophile Deyrolle—who would later marry his sister Suzanne—Alfred Guillou founded an artists’ colony in Concarneau. Like the one in Pont-Aven, it would influence many artists for whom the customs and age-old traditions of the Breton people represented a form of primitivism: Léon Joubert, François-Alfred Delobbe, Antonin Mercié, as well as Jules Bastien-Lepage, Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret, and others.
