Catalog of Paintings, Vol. 1: 1911–1937, Zurich 1977, p. 234, no. 302 (with illustration) Max Gubler’s work focused not on the mere reproduction of the visible world, but on its painterly transformation. The Zurich artist drew decisive inspiration during his stays on the Italian island of Lipari (1924–1928) and in Paris (1930–1937). In his landscapes, figure paintings, and still lifes, he developed an increasingly expressive style in which vibrant colors and dynamic brushstrokes at times almost dissolve the forms.
