Kurt Fahrner 1932 Basel 1977 Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher. 1962 Oil and paper collage on rough-textured paper Monogrammed, dated, and inscribed lower left: K. F. 62 Århus Framed 40 × 30 cm Diana Fahrner/Markus Wildi, Kurt Fahrner. The Complete Works, Basel 1998, p. 117, no. 173 (with illustration) The indictment from the so-called “Barfüsserplatz Affair” is incorporated into the ground layer of this painting. The affair caused a major sensation in Basel in 1959 when Kurt Fahrner publicly displayed a painting of a naked, crucified woman on Barfüsserplatz. The police confiscated the work, leading to a legal dispute. The scandal became a symbol of the conflict between artistic freedom and the conservative moral values of postwar Swiss society. The inclusion of the indictment in this painting suggests that, in his depiction of Joan of Arc—who was burned as a heretic in 1431—Fahrner also processed his own experiences of social exclusion and legal persecution.
