Hans Erni 1909 Lucerne 2015 Walnut Painting II. 1975 Acrylic on canvas Signed and dated lower right: erni 1.11.75. Titled on the reverse Framed 61 × 65 cm Hans Erni, Fundació Caixa de Pensions, Barcelona, July 21–August 23, 1992 In this painting, Hans Erni explores a classic theme of still-life painting, which he interprets in an unusual way. Against a monochromatic background, the artist arranges a whole walnut, cracked shells, and individual fragments in a seemingly random composition. The precise, almost illusionistic rendering of the objects evokes the tradition of trompe-l’œil, in which the boundaries between painted representation and reality are deliberately blurred. At the same time, the generous emptiness of the pictorial space lends these unassuming objects a special presence. The work illustrates Erni’s virtuosity as a draftsman and his intense engagement with representational art, which has characterized his work since the end of his abstract phase.
