Alois Carigiet 1902 Trun 1985 Sled, ca. 1958 Mixed media on paper Signed and dated lower left: A. Carigiet 58 Framed 35.5 × 45 cm (light measurement) The mountains of Graubünden, with their people, animals, and time-honored customs, form an essential part of Alois Carigiet’s work. His artistic career, however, began in Zurich, where he first established himself as a successful commercial artist and poster designer and was among the co-founders of the Cabaret Cornichon in 1934. In 1939, he returned to Graubünden and from then on devoted himself increasingly to fine art painting. He gained international recognition not least through his children’s book illustrations, particularly “Schellen-Ursli.” His depictions of rural life combine precise observation of nature with a distinctive, often humorous, and narrative visual language. The 1958 work “Schlitteda” depicts the traditional horse-drawn sleigh ride in the Engadin, which is particularly associated with festive occasions and winter customs.
