Paul Camenisch 1893 Zurich – 1970 Basel Bergell, Soglio. 1926 Colored chalk on paper Signed and dated lower right: Camenisch 26; titled lower left: Bergell, Soglio Framed 34.2 × 43.8 cm (sheet size) Along with Hermann Scherer and Albert Müller, Paul Camenisch was one of the founding members of the Basel artists’ association Rot-Blau, established in 1924–25, which, under the influence of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, made a significant contribution to the development of Swiss Expressionism. His landscape depictions play a significant role in this context, in which he interpreted the topographical features through free, expressive lines and a deliberate intensification of colors. The mountain landscape of Bergell also provided him with a captivating motif for his artistic exploration of the Alpine landscape.
