Samuel Buri 1935, Täuffelen Untitled Oil on hardboard Signed lower left: BURI Framed 74.5 × 78 cm With his move to Paris in 1959, Samuel Buri began an intensive engagement with the international art movements of the postwar period. Prior to that, he had studied at the Allgemeine Gewerbeschule in Basel, where he was taught by Martin Christ and Walter Bodmer, among others. Influenced by American Abstract Expressionism, Art Informel, and later Pop Art, he developed a distinctive visual language characterized by vibrant colors. After an initial abstract phase, he returned to representational motifs in the 1960s. Nature, in particular, became an important source of inspiration, first during his stay in Givry, Burgundy, and later in Habkern in the Bernese Oberland. He transformed flower meadows, gardens, and landscapes into vividly colored compositions that blend figurative elements with ornamental abstraction.
