Buchet, Gustave 1888 Etoy – 1963 Lausanne The Cargo Ship Aground in the Harbor. Circa 1928 Watercolor Signed lower left: G. BUCHET Framed 47 × 31.5 cm (light measurement) Christian Zeller Fine Arts, Bern, 1989; private collection, Switzerland In the 1920s, Gustave Buchet engaged intensively with the artistic movements of the Parisian avant-garde. Cubism, Futurism, and later Purism in particular influenced his development toward an increasingly geometric and abstract visual language. After completing his training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva, he spent extended periods in Paris, where he was exposed to the artistic ideas of Fernand Léger, Le Corbusier, and Amédée Ozenfant, among others. The watercolor “Le cargo échoué au port,” created around 1928, illustrates this development. The ship’s hull and the harbor architecture are broken down into angular, interlocking planes, yet the representational elements remain recognizable despite the extensive abstraction.
