Maurice Barraud 1889 Geneva 1954 Japonaise à l'ombrelle Oil on hardboard Signed lower left: M. Barraud Framed 46.5 × 38.5 cm After training as a commercial artist, Maurice Barraud attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva and, in 1914, founded the group “Le Falot” together with his brother Gustave François and other artists. Over the course of his artistic development, he devoted himself in particular to depicting female figures, which became a central motif in his work. Influenced by French painting, he developed an increasingly light color palette and a simplified formal language. The painting “Japonaise à l’ombrelle,” depicting a Japanese woman with a parasol, takes up a motif that had become widespread in European art since the late 19th century in the wake of Japonism.
