Arnoldi Nag 1928 Locarno – 2017 Lugano Untitled. 1967 Mixed media on plywood Signed and dated lower right: NAG 67 Unframed 150 × 97.5 cm Before turning primarily to sculpture in the 1970s, Nag Arnoldi devoted himself intensively to painting, printmaking, and ceramics. A native of Ticino, he received his artistic training in the studios of Giuseppe Foglia, Antonio Chiattone, Filippo Boldini, and Carlo Cotti in Lugano. The works of Pablo Picasso and the European Expressionists were particularly influential in his early development. During trips to Mexico, he also explored the art of pre-Columbian cultures. This 1967 mixed-media work on plywood belongs to this experimental phase of his career, during which Arnoldi experimented with various materials and forms of expression. Beginning in 1962, he also taught at the School of Applied Arts in Lugano, where he remained active until 1993.
