Cuno Amiet 1868 Solothurn – 1961 Oschwand Sunset I. 1940 Oil on canvas Monogrammed and dated lower right: CA 40. Titled on the reverse of the stretcher Framed 46 × 55 cm Landscape painting occupies a central place in Cuno Amiet’s oeuvre. Already during his stay in Pont-Aven in Brittany, he explored Post-Impressionist painting and color as an independent creative medium. Since settling in Oschwand in 1898, he found an inexhaustible source of new motifs in the immediate surroundings of his home and studio. Over the decades, he captured gardens, meadows, trees, and shifting light conditions in numerous paintings. The work “Sunset I,” created in 1940, is part of this long-standing engagement with the landscape, in which the effect of color increasingly took precedence over a lifelike depiction.
