Souza) 1924 Goa – 2002 Mumbai Untitled. 1953 Ink on paper Signed and dated upper right: Souza 53 Framed 24.7 × 19.5 cm (inside dimensions) Delhi Art Gallery, Delhi, October 15, 2005; private collection, Switzerland In 1947, Francis Newton Souza, together with other artists in Bombay, founded the “Progressive Artists’ Group,” which advocated for a renewal of Indian art. Previously, the painter, who was originally from Goa, had been expelled from the Sir J. J. School of Art due to his political activities. In 1949, he moved to London, where he established himself as an artist in the years that followed. Religious themes, social taboos, and the human figure were central to his work throughout his life. In his paintings and works on paper, he developed an expressive visual language characterized by bold contours and abstract forms.
