Pissarro, Paul Émile 1884 Éragny – 1972 Clécy Garden with a Peasant Woman Pastel Signed lower right: Paul Émile Pissarro Framed 29.5 × 21.5 cm (inside dimensions) Galerie Aktuaryus, Strasbourg (label on the reverse); private collection, Switzerland As the youngest son of the famous Impressionist Camille Pissarro, Paul-Émile Pissarro grew up in an environment steeped in art. From an early age, he received artistic inspiration from his father and his father’s friend Claude Monet, who continued to support him after Camille’s death in 1903. Although he initially pursued other careers, he eventually devoted himself entirely to painting. The landscapes of Normandy, with their rivers, meadows, and rural scenes, became his favorite subjects. His works follow in the tradition of Impressionism but are characterized by an increasingly distinctive, expressive use of color and a lively brushstroke.
