Lurçat, Jean 1892 Bruyères – 1966 St. Paul Woman. 1925 Watercolor and gouache Signed and dated lower right: Lurcat 25 Framed 37 × 26 cm (inside dimensions) Private collection, Belgium; private collection, Switzerland This drawing from 1925 was created at a time when Jean Lurçat was already well established in the Paris art scene. The artist, who hailed from the Vosges, had begun his training in Nancy and moved to Paris in 1912. Travels throughout Europe and the Mediterranean region, as well as his encounters with the contemporary avant-garde, shaped his multifaceted body of work. In addition to paintings and drawings, he created book illustrations and his first designs for tapestries. Beginning in the 1930s, the latter would increasingly become the focus of his work and earn him international recognition as an innovator of French tapestry art.
