Gotthard Graubner 1930 Erlbach, Saxony – 2013 Düsseldorf Untitled. 1964 Watercolor Signed and dated lower center: Gotthard Graubner 1964 Framed 18 × 12 cm (sheet size) Through his explorations of the spatial effects of color, Gotthard Graubner developed a distinctive voice within postwar abstract painting. After studying in Berlin and Düsseldorf, he began creating his characteristic color-space forms in the 1960s, in which color takes on an almost physical presence. In his works on paper as well, he explored the interplay of layers of color, transparency, and light. This work from 1969 features overlapping, softly defined color fields whose delicate shades of yellow and pink blend into one another, creating a floating, three-dimensional effect.
