Dawson Montague 1895 London – 1973 Sussex Shimmering Gold – The Wool Clipper Aryan Oil on canvas Signed lower left: Montague Dawson. Titled on the back on a gallery label Framed 71.5 × 108 cm Frost & Reed, London, No. 58147 (label on the back); private collection, Switzerland A fascination with the great sailing ships of the 19th century shaped the artistic work of the British marine painter Montague Dawson. As the son of a family with a maritime tradition, he began depicting ships and seascapes at an early age. During World War I, he served in the Royal Navy, gaining firsthand experience at sea. His paintings are characterized by a meticulous rendering of the ships as well as a particular attention to light, wind, and the movement of water. This work depicts a fully rigged three-masted ship on the open sea, its sails illuminated by the warm light of the low-hanging sun.
