Jean Cocteau 1889 Maisons-Laffitte – 1963 Milly-la-Forêt Female Nude Pencil on paper Signed lower right: Jean Cocteau Framed 34.7 × 26.3 cm (sheet size) Galerie Hiltl, Basel; private collection, Switzerland Certificate of Authenticity: Dominique Bert, Archives Guédras, Paris, September 28, 2026. Throughout his life, Jean Cocteau devoted himself intensively to drawing, which, alongside his work as a writer, poet, filmmaker, and theater artist, formed an important part of his multifaceted body of work. As early as 1924, he published *Dessins*, his first standalone volume of drawings, which was followed by further publications. Characteristic of his work is a minimalist, flowing line style, with which he often captured figures and faces using just a few contours. For Cocteau, drawing and writing were closely related; he viewed drawing as another form of written expression. The human figure—particularly the nude and erotic depictions—is among the recurring motifs in his drawings. Sheet slightly browned Auction date: November 28, 2026 Approximate auction time: 1:35 p.m. CET
