Bakre (1920–2007) was one of the leading figures in modern Indian art. Initially, he devoted himself primarily to sculpture before increasingly turning to painting and drawing. In 1951, he moved to London, where he worked for several decades and developed a distinctive visual language that straddled the line between figuration and abstraction.
