Hermann Scherer 1893 Rümmingen – 1927 Basel Couple by the Lamp Woodcut Signed lower right: H. Scherer; titled lower left Framed 48.5 × 68 cm (light dimensions) This print was created in the spring of 1925 as an annual gift for the associate members of the Rot-Blau group and was sent to them on April 22, 1925, along with a woodcut by the artist depicting a Ticino landscape. The woodcut “Couple by the Lamp” was created around 1925 during a particularly productive phase in Hermann Scherer’s career. Inspired by his encounter with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, the artist began to explore woodcut printing intensively in 1924. In just a few years, he created over a hundred woodcuts, which rank among the most significant works of printmaking in Swiss Expressionism. Characteristic of his work are the powerful, angular lines and the strong light-dark contrasts, through which Scherer imbued his depictions with an immediate emotional expressiveness.
