Unframed Height: approx. 9.5 cm each; width: 14.1 cm In 1892, Emil Nolde moved to St. Gallen, where he worked as a teacher of commercial and ornamental design drawing at the School of the Museum of Applied Arts. The proximity to the Alps fascinated him. He joined the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) and, among other peaks, climbed the Matterhorn. In his spare time, he created drawings of grotesquely personified Swiss mountain peaks, which he published as postcards while still using his birth name, Emil Hansen. The series proved to be a huge commercial success and enabled him to continue his artistic training beginning in 1898 and to devote himself to fine art from then on.
