Hans Sandreuter 1850 Basel – 1901 Riehen Water Carrier (Girl with a Jug). 1884 Oil on canvas Signed lower right (pseudonym): Ivan Muterson Framed 118.5 × 72 cm Dobiaschofsky Auctions, Bern, May 7, 2021, Lot 61; private collection, Switzerland Fin de Siècle in Basel. Hans Sandreuter 1850–1901, Kunstmuseum Basel, November 17, 2001 – February 17, 2002, No. 51 (illustrated in the exhibition catalog, p. 31). The painting “Water Carrier (Girl with a Jug),” created in 1884, belongs to Hans Sandreuter’s early oeuvre and was painted during his time in Italy. The depiction of a young water carrier draws on a motif from everyday life that was frequently explored in 19th-century painting. The work was created during a period when Sandreuter was intensively engaged with Italian art and the paintings of Arnold Böcklin, before he returned to Basel in 1885.
