Patà Cherubino 1827 Sonogno – 1899 Gordola Attributed Winter Landscape Oil on canvas Signed and dated lower right: G. Courbet 68. Typographically inscribed on the reverse: COURBET Framed 61.5 × 97 cm Herbert Klopfer Art Gallery, St. Gallen/Zurich; private collection, Switzerland The work of the Ticino painter Cherubino Patà is closely linked to that of Gustave Courbet. After training at the drawing school in Locarno, he initially worked as a portrait painter in western Switzerland before settling in Lyon in 1860 and later in Paris. There he met Courbet, becoming his student, close confidant, and most important collaborator. When Courbet went into exile in Switzerland in 1873, Patà followed him and assisted him both in the execution of his paintings and in the organization of his studio and the sale of his works. The two artists collaborated closely, particularly on landscape paintings, with Patà at times executing entire compositions that were subsequently revised and signed by Courbet. To this day, this collaboration complicates the unambiguous attribution of numerous works and makes Patà a key figure in art-historical research on Courbet’s late work.
