Gabriel Loppé 1825 Montpellier – 1913 Geneva Landscape of Lake Annecy Oil on canvas, with relining Signed lower right: G. Loppé Framed 37 × 47.5 cm As an avid mountaineer, Gabriel Loppé explored the mountains not only with his paintbrush and sketchbook but also as an experienced climber. After a brief stay in François Diday’s Geneva studio, the French artist developed his landscape painting largely through self-study. He lived for time in Annecy and Geneva and spent numerous summers in Chamonix, where he captured, in particular, the glaciers and peaks of the Mont Blanc massif. In addition to high-Alpine motifs, he also devoted himself to the lake landscapes of Savoy. The present painting, “Paysage du lac d’Annecy,” follows in this tradition and illustrates his interest in the atmospheric effects of light, snow, and water.
