Hodel 1893 Framed 38 × 80.5 cm The impressive mountain scenery of Central Switzerland was a central focus of Ernst Hodel’s work. His father, too, had devoted himself intensively to depicting the Alps and had founded the Alpineum in Lucerne, in the design of which his son also played a role. After receiving his initial training in Lucerne, Hodel studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and undertook study trips abroad. He became particularly well-known for his large-format Alpine panoramas and landscape paintings. This painting, dated 1893, depicts Lake Uri with its towering mountains and two sailboats.
