The convivial activities of the Flemish rural population were a central theme in the work of Mattheus van Helmont. Born in Antwerp, the painter became a master of the local Guild of St. Luke in 1645/46 and worked in Brussels beginning in 1674. Influenced by David Teniers II and Adriaen Brouwer, he specialized in tavern scenes, peasant festivals, and village gatherings. These two paintings depicting peasant gatherings reflect the motifs characteristic of his work. Auction Date: November 28, 2026 Approximate Auction Time: 9:35 a.m. CET
