Claeuw Jacques Adolphsz de 1623 Dordrecht – after 1694 Leiden Attributed Vanitas with Skulls Oil on oak Framed 42 × 64 cm J. H. J. Mellaart, The Hague, 1942; J. Denijs, Amsterdam, 1942; H. Jüngeling, The Hague, 1962; Collection of Dr. W. Sassenscheift, Hamm, 1971; Dorotheum, Vienna, December 16, 2021, Lot 23; Private collection, Switzerland This work, attributed to Jacques de Claeuw, follows in the tradition of 17th-century Dutch vanitas painting. The composition, featuring two skulls, bones, a document, and a nearly extinguished candle, addresses the transience of human life. While the skulls and bones allude to mortality, the dying candle symbolizes the brevity of life. Such vanitas depictions formed an important part of the oeuvre of Jacques de Claeuw, who devoted himself in particular to still life painting.
