Busch, Wilhelm 1832 Wiedensahl – 1908 Mechtshausen Forest Landscape with Two Seated Figures Oil on paper, mounted on cardboard Numbered on the reverse: P.M. 811; also indistinctly inscribed and dated in pencil: (…) Landscape (…) 3.11.28 Framed 15 × 29.4 cm Gertrud Vogelsang, née Nöldeke, until 1960; Collection of Mr. Hochhüth(?), 1960 (according to the note on the reverse); private collection, Switzerland Wilhelm Busch (1832–1908) is best known as an illustrator, poet, and creator of the picture stories of “Max and Moritz.” Less well known is his extensive body of paintings, to which he devoted himself throughout his life. After training at the art academies in Düsseldorf, Antwerp, and Munich, he developed a distinctive visual language influenced by 17th-century Dutch painting. Particularly from the 1880s onward, his painting style became increasingly free and expressive. His landscapes, mostly small in scale, are characterized by lively brushstrokes, bold color contrasts, and an immediate rendering of natural moods. Stylistically, this painting can likely be attributed to this later creative phase, during which Busch developed a remarkably modern style of painting that at times pushed the boundaries of abstraction.
