Lucas I Cranach 1472 Kronach – 1553 Weimar The Temptation of St. Anthony Woodcut (with “Crowned Coat of Arms” watermark) Unframed 38.2 × 28 cm (sheet size) Hollstein 76 II (of II) The hermit, who has fallen helplessly onto his back, is dragged upward by a horde of demonic creatures and attacked with stones and sticks. The winged creatures—some equipped with horns and claws, others resembling insects, wild boars, or dragons—dominate more than half of the composition. Yet Anthony is able to withstand the attacks of the demons sent by the devil through his unshakable faith. The event is recorded in the *Legenda Aurea*, written around 1264 by Jacobus de Voragine, and provided the artist with an opportunity for a particularly imaginative interpretation. The expansive landscape in the lower part of the painting provides a tranquil counterpoint to the turbulent action. The coats of arms depicted refer to the Saxon Elector Frederick the Wise, in whose service Cranach stood. Lower edge trimmed. Sheet slightly foxed with very small tears and restored tears. Auction date: November 27, 2026 Approximate auction time: 6:29 p.m. CET
