Bird Figurine by Alessandro Pianon, "Pulcino" Murano, ca. 1962. Designed by Alessandro Pianon for Vetreria Vistosi. "Pulcino" model (S 193). Spherical bird body made of colorless and orange glass with fused glass granules and a textured surface. Small, applied beak. Eyes made of fused, polychrome murrine; legs made of copper wire. Height 22.5 cm Alessandro Pianon (1931–1984) was a Venetian architect and designer. In 1956, he was initially commissioned by the Vistosi glassworks to design the company logo. This led to a long-standing collaboration, during which he designed numerous glass objects and collections. Among his best-known works are the “Pulcini” (Italian for “chicks”), created around 1960–1962, a series of five stylized glass birds with various body shapes, including spherical, cubic, and triangular forms. They are characterized by their colored glass bodies and delicate copper-wire bases. A group of these birds is part of the Olnick Spanu Collection in New York.
