Mask of Ludwig van Beethoven Patinated bronze. Probably early 20th century. Mask of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) with closed eyes and a laurel wreath, likely based on the life mask by Franz Klein (1812). Cast hollow, with a soldered hanging mechanism on the back. Unmarked. Patina worn on the forehead, nose, and cheek. Signs of age and wear. Width 19 cm, height 25 cm In 1812, Franz Klein took a plaster mask directly from the face of the living Beethoven in Vienna for a bust. This life mask is considered the most accurate reproduction of his facial features and served as the model for numerous casts and wall masks in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
