Figure of Admiral Togo. Beautiful painted terracotta piece. Marked “A” on the back. Hollow. Beautifully painted (90% intact). Height approximately 15 cm. Admiral Tōgō Heihachirō (1848–1934) was the most famous military leader of the Imperial Japanese Navy, often referred to as the “Nelson of the East” by Western historians. Appointed commander-in-chief of the Japanese Combined Fleet, Tōgō led the naval operations in the conflict between Japan and Russia. The Battle of Tsushima, May 27–28, 1905, was his tactical masterpiece. Aboard his flagship, the battleship Mikasa, he intercepted the Russian Baltic Fleet, which had just circumnavigated the globe to reach Vladivostok. Using the famous “T-barrier” maneuver—blocking the enemy column’s path to deploy his full broadside fire—he destroyed nearly the entire Russian fleet. The victory at Tsushima under Tōgō’s command had global repercussions. For the first time in modern history, an Asian nation had defeated a major European power militarily. This victory elevated Tōgō to the status of a national hero in Japan and a legend in global naval strategy. Please note slight wear and patina on the piece. Condition I-. Figure of Admiral Tōgō.
